Cycling

If you enjoy cycling then using Ryde as your base to stay is ideal. You can bring your cycle to the Island free of charge on the Wightlink Car Ferry and Fast Cat, or alternatively you can hire bicycles from two local businesses in Ryde.

I Love Ryde think that the Island is an ideal location for cyclists. There is a network of quiet lanes and way-marked bridleways. There is a well signposted ‘round-island’ road route. A number of cycleways follow some of the Island’s old railway lines. Contact tourist offices for information. A pamphlet showing the Island’s route is available. Off road maps can be purchased and there are also two small books of suggested rides available.

Kitesurfing, Surfing and Windsurfing

Kite Buggying on Ryde Sands at Sunset

RYDE / PUCKPOOL / SEAVIEW- Kitesurfing / Windsurfing- Level : Beginner-Intermediate. As you arrive on the ferry or Hovercraft from Portsmouth or Southsea you will see a huge expanse of sandy beach at low tide. The area between Ryde and Bembridge on the Solent side offers superb beginner conditions. The gently shelving beach allows for waist deep water at half tide and sand bars and pools at low tide. Puckpool, , much like Bembridge, is very good for learning with a lagoon forming at low water. At low tide, Ryde again offers long sandy beaches and plenty of room and shallow water. At high tide beware not to launch anywhere too close upwind of the pier. There are ferries, hovercraft, fishermen, and plenty of boats, but more importantly a fairly strong current taking you straight into them on SE/E winds. At this state of tide head east towards Seaview/Puckpool and launch from there instead. Best wind directions W/NW-E/SE.

Apart from swimming in the sea, Ryde has a well appointed swimming pool.  The Waterside Pool is open all year and has facilities for everyone,  from toddlers to 50+ groups, offering activities that include casual swimming, snorkelling, aquafit classes, swimming lessons and pool lifeguard training.
The pool also features one of the south coast's most unusual features: a retractable roof. In the summer when the sun shines and the temperatures are rising, the roof opens, allowing customers to benefit from the best an indoor pool can offer with that of an open air facility.
