Ryde Armed Forces Day
Saturday 27 June 2009
Armed Forces Day - Saturday 27th June
Ryde Town Council is supporting the Island's first Armed Forces Day celebrations, which will be held along North Walk and in Appley Park, and is very pleased to help honour the contribution made by members, of all ages, of the Armed Forces. The Town Council is underwriting some of the cost of the event, including the hire of Appley Park; the Isle of Wight Council is unfortunately refusing to waive this charge.
The Royal British Legion's John Taylor, who is leading the event, said "Armed Forces Day honours the outstanding contribution made by current members of the Armed Forces and by veterans of all ages. The day will be an opportunity for us all to join together to pay tribute to our Armed Forces past, present and future."
North Walk will have a display of military vehicles, while around the lifeboat area will be various display stands, and buffet marquees for participants. The military parade will commence at 2pm in North Walk, and end in Appley Park. There will be demonstration beach landings by 165 Regiment Territorial Army, and sea rescue displays from Ryde Inshore Rescue, as well as fly-pasts by various RAF formations. The day will end with Proms in the Park by the Trident Concert Band, and finally a display from Jubilee Fireworks.
