Ryde to the Rescue
Ryde Town Council is pleased to announce that it will be working in partnership with Ryde Inshore Rescue and Hovertravel to provide a comprehensive beach safety and first aid service on the town's beaches this summer. The partnership has stepped in to provide this service in response to an outcry from local residents following the Isle of Wight Council's decision to cease the lifeguard service due to budget pressures. The new service will be based at Ryde Inshore Rescue's Rescue Centre at Appley and will make use of the organisation's skills and facilities to provide 7 day a week cover from 1 July to 4 September and in the May half term. The service will be supported by Hovertravel as part of it own campaign to increase water and beach safety awareness for families travelling to and from the Island. Ryde Town Mayor Brian Harris said ' I am absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with Ryde Inshore Rescue and Hovertravel to ensure the safely of residents and visitors on our beaches in Ryde this summer."
Marketing Projects
The Town Council has agreed to again undertake a number of projects which are aimed at promoting Ryde as a wonderful place to visit. The Council will be publishing an up to date Attractions and Facilities Map which will be circulated across the Island, in mainland ferry terminals and mainiand visitor information centres. The Council has also recommissioned its ‘Ryde Feature’ which will be shown on all the Wightlink ferries during the school summer holiday period along with a new, iconic Events Poster featuring all the events happening in the town this summer.

Isle of Wight Council Budget Cuts – the Future of Services in Ryde – An Update
The Town Council held a special Town Meeting 13 January to seek the views of residents on what options are available to Ryde as a community to respond to the cuts announced by the Isle of Wight Council. These proposed cuts include the closure of the Waterside Pool, the Tourist Information Centre, Binstead toilets and the ceasing of the lifeguard service. Around 100 residents attended the Town Meeting and gave their views on which services could be continued to be provided in the town either by the Town Council or via some other arrangement. The Town Council will be considering these views and comments carefully when it sets its budget and precept in February. You still have time to let the Council have your views by visiting the Town Council’s website at www.rydetowncouncil.gov.uk.
Allotments
Following the formation of Ryde Town Council in 2008 the ownership of the allotments in the Ryde area passed from the Isle of Wight Council to the Town Council. The Town Council will be assuming responsibility for managing allotments with effect from 1 February 2011. The Town Council has written to all the plotholders held on record on record by the Isle of Wight Council. RTC budget meeting 2011
To help us set our precept for the financial year 2011-12
The precept is a local tax, raised by all Town and Parish Councils on the island, and is an amount additional to the Isle of Wight Council’s council tax. It is collected on Ryde Town Council’s behalf by IWC, but is purely under RTC’s control.
In the light of the dramatic cessation of funding by IWC, with proposed cuts of £ 17.8 Million, we want to know which, if any, services you think we should help to finance.
This information shows approximate costings for the various services under threat, the extra amount they would cost, what other councils on the island charged last year, and where your precept went.
| Service under threat | Approx. cost | Extra per week per Band D property |
| Waterside Pool | £300,000 | 66p |
| Lifeguards | £25 - 30,00 | 7p |
| Tourist Information Centre | £20 -30,000 | 7p |
| Binstead Toilets | £3,000 | 1/2p |
| Carnival Learning Centre | £ not available | N/A |
| Non-targeted Youth Services | £ not available | N/A |
Precept amounts that could be raised Provisional tax base in Ryde for 2011-12 is 8809.5 *
Example: Precept of £ 500,000 divided by 8809.5 equals £ 56.76, or £ 1.09 pw.
Currently £ 22.97 raises £ 200,000 approx 44p per week
£ 45.40 would raise £ 400,000 approx 87p per week
£ 68.11 would raise £ 600,000 approx £ 1.31 per week
£ 90.81 would raise £ 800,000 approx £ 1.75 per week
*The tax base is worked out yearly by IWC as a theoretical number of properties rated at Band D, to include full and single occupancy, 2nd homes, empty properties, and properties built or demolished in the preceding year. It includes all properties, irrespective of who pays the Council Tax [occupier, DSS, etc.].
