2012: We’re ready!
From January 9, The New Carnival Company (The NCC) will be moving into its new administrative base at East Yar Road Business Park in Sandown. These newly built two-storey premises, located just off the main A3055 Ryde to Sandown road, will form a new carnival hub for the Island as we will be sharing office and production space with leading carnival artists from Shademakers, an award winning Germanbased carnival company who are relocating their UK operations to
Isle of Wight. (You may remember Shademakers’ spectacular white horses at the 2011 NatWest Island Games Opening Ceremony.)

This exciting partnership will open the door to many new and innovative creative collaborations, both locally and internationally and will significantly strengthen the carnival learning and production sector in the region. Like The NCC, Shademakers is a designated Arts Council England National portfolio organisation.
Arts Council England has generously awarded The NCC some additional Transition funding to ensure all systems are in place to enable us to hit the ground running for their National portfolio launch in April 2012. This includes new website development, profiling and networking solutions, Board development days and business planning support. The NCC will continue to operate its core learning programmes from The Carnival Learning Centre at Westridge, thanks to a Service Level Agreement with the Isle of Wight Council.
Blue Touch Paper Carnival project gets RIO – Savvy!

The highly acclaimed disability carnival project www.btpcarnival.co.uk, an established partnership between The NCC and lead body Horsham District Council, has received the news that funding from Arts Council England will support its development programme through 2012. This means that planned activities in samba drum (West Sussex) and costume and float making (Isle of Wight) can go ahead, working to a RIO carnival theme with links to 2016 Olympics.
We are joining forces with Embaixadores da Alegria, a disability Samba School in Brazil, (www.happyambassadorsbrazil.blogspot.com) to share experience and best practice over the coming years. Representatives of The NCC will be visiting the group in Rio during January, and a Brazilian artists’ residency is planned at the Carnival Learning Centre over the Easter period.
The outcome - Blue Touch Paper Samba School - will premiere at The Arts Parade in Ryde in June before visiting Horsham and other West Sussex festivities.
We are currently exploring involvement with both Olympic and Paralympics torch events over the summer.
News in breif
Skills training for regional carnival organisers and artists
The NCC is facilitating a series of training days on behalf of Carnival Network South East (CNSE) in the early Spring at venues across the region. This follows an extensive piece of research and analysis carried out by the company on behalf of CNSE, and programme delivery is likely to include content around Event Planning and Risk Management as well as providing creative ideas and a hands-on approach for engaging more schools and young people into carnival. The project is funded by Arts Council England and forms part of an ongoing programme of cooperation and collaboration between carnivals and artists in the South East. Membership is open and (currently) free of charge. Contact us for more info and/or if you wish to join the Network.
Up and Down: The Kite Festival
A new project being delivered by us on the Island in partnership with Natural Wight (Spectrum Medina Housing) and National Trust/AONB, funded through
Natural England. The aim is to get more people from social housing areas to engage with the green environment in a positive way. They will be making kites themed around Local Biodiversity Action Plan species and take part in a short procession (walk) on Culver Down and a massed Kite Fly on 16 June. Any schools or groups wishing to get involved can access Kite Leaders training and start-up kit from us ahead of the event.
The Arts Parade

Following the outstanding success of last summer’s Parade for the Opening of the NatWest International Island Games, The NCC is adopting the Arts Parade as its flagship event for the Island. We will continue to support creative development for schools, groups, individuals and volunteers through a programme of workshops, accredited courses and masterclasses in the run up to the event. Don’t miss our Arts Parade LAUNCH at the Carnival Learning Centre on Feb 1 for announcements, information, opportunities and more!
